Computer Guide Part 2
RAM (Memory)
RAM stands for Random Access Memory. The more RAM that you have, the
more you can do on your computer at one time.
When you open programs on your computer, the program needs space to open
up, so it opens up in memory chips that you have installed in your
computer. When you make a file on your computer, like a letter or memo,
it is stored temporarily in these memory chips (RAM). The more memory
that you have installed, the more programs, games, letters, etc. that
you can have open at one time.
SDRAM is the current type RAM used in most computers. It is sold in
sticks called DIMMs.
• Always buy as much RAM as you can afford.
• RAM is measured in megabytes (MB). The more RAM that you have (i.e.
128MB), the more you can do on your computer without slowing down.
• RAM is rated by speed. Most computers use PC-100 or PC-133 SDRAM.
• A newer type of RAM is called DDR (Double Data Rate) RAM. This is sold
as PC1600 and PC2100.
