Guide Part 2
To run Disk Defragmenter:
Disk Defragmenter also needs to run while no other programs are running.
Unfortunately, Defragmenter won’t run from DOS, so you will need to
manually shut all programs down.
1) Press the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete key simultaneously.
2) This brings up the ‘Close Program’ box, which lists all of the
programs that are running in the background.
3) Click on a program’s name, except Explorer and Systray, and then
click ‘End Task’.
4) This will stop that program.
5) Hit Ctrl, Alt, and Delete again, choose the next program to close,
and again click ‘End Task’.
6) Continue this process until all of the programs are closed except
Explorer and Systray.
7) Some of these programs are stubborn, and you may have to repeat the
process with them a few times.
8) In some cases, when you click ‘End Task’, another window will pop up
telling you that the program in question is busy. This window will also
have an ‘End task’ button, which you will need to click to close that
program.
9) Once all of the programs are closed (except Explorer and Systray),
you are ready to run the Disk Defragmenter.
10) Go to ‘Start’, ‘Programs’, ‘Accessories’, ‘System Tools’, and click
on ‘Disk Defragmenter’.
11) The ‘Select Drive’ box will open.
12) Click the ‘Settings’ button.
13) Put a check mark next to ‘Rearrange program files so my programs
start faster’, and ‘Check the drive for errors’
14) Click the button next to ’Every time I defragment my hard drive’.
15) Click ‘OK’.
16) Click ‘OK’ again, and the Disk Defragmenter will start.
17) This may take a long time, so you may want to run it overnight. Each
time you run it will get finished faster, however.
18) When it is done, it will ask if you want to exit Disk Defragmenter.
Click ‘Yes’
19) Reboot the computer.
